» Embryo
Christian Burchard, Edgar Hofmann and Lothar Meid have founded Embryo in Munich in 1969. Already in the middle of the 50's (!) Burchard and Dieter Serfas have worked together - both are still members of the band. Shortly after the foundation the revolving door started to turn, and up to now more than 400 musicians have been involved in this universe (like Chris Karrer, Jimmy Jackson, Dieter Miekautsch, Dave King, Ramesh Shotham – and many more), just as well as the plenty of guests who played together with Embryo in studio or on stage (like Charlie Mariano, Roland Schaeffer, Mal Waldron, Hermann Breuer, Sigi Schwab, Geoff Goodman, Trilok Gurtu, Peter Michael Hamel –to name but a few).
Long time ago they became a legend, and this band is still active. During the years they created their style which is characteristic for Embryo; but sometimes they exist for several years, then they disappear, only to come back again later: the wind sections, heavy funky influences in the 70's, quite early world music (the members of Embryo have travelled for the Goethe institute to east asia in their early years where they learned about classical and ethnical music styles and met with artists there), a diversity between jazz, pop, funk and world music
Their first album was „Opal“ in 1970. The band made their experiments with jazzrock and psychedelic song structures, they added flute, sax, percussion, marimba and vibraphone to the classic rock instruments. Many albums arised during their expanded tours through all continents. In 1980 two members of the band separated and founded the world music band Embryo’s Dissidenten, which became shortly after Dissidenten. Embryo carried on working, published albums, gave concerts and went on tours all over the world. Not only the 20 studio albums are interesting, but their live albums, too. After the apperance of CD their offical vinyls have been reprinted, as well as various concert redordings (e.g. „Bremen 1971“, „Wiesbaden 1972“, „Live im Wendland“ 2007).
To this day an Embryo concert is a great experience, and no two performances are the same. World music and jazzrock are only two basics from where Embryo - now live at Zappanale - is starting the musical journey.
